Beaton and Todd Show Speed at MX Nats

29 Apr 2014

The GYTR Yamaha duo of Jed Beaton and Wilson Todd continue to turn heads with impressive speed and never say die riding that will hold them in good stead as the 2014 MX Nationals unfolds this season.

Both have proven a revelation in 2014 and again that was the case at round three of the MX Nationals at Wonthaggi over the weekend when both riders set the pace in qualifying with Todd taking top spot, just ahead of team mate Beaton.

Come race time, both riders were confident of a good showing and things looked in place as the 40 rider field entered the first turn with Todd in the lead and Beaton right on his tail. Unfortunately, things unravelled in the next lap with Todd sliding out and then Beaton ‘yardsaled ’ his bike in the whoops but both riders don’t know how to quit and the race back to the front was on.

Beaton picked up his bent and twisted bike in 37th place and some distance behind the field. After a lap to get adjusted to his bent bike, Beaton then went on a rampage, passing riders at will and climbed all the way to sixth place and within sight of the top three. His charge in front of his home town crowd was met with huge cheers with every pass.

Moto two and this time there would be no mistakes. He snatched the lead as the field exited the first turn and he motored away and took a comfortable win. His 6-1 results for the round gave him second on the day and he now sits second in the championship, just three behind championship leader, Jack Simpson.

“I felt pretty good all day today and it was cool having a lot of people here to cheer me on,” he said. “Both Wil and I got a great start in race one, but we both threw it away. I flipped my bike in the whoops and it just cartwheeled down the track so I was lucky I was even able to ride it.

“I managed to get back to sixth and pick up good points but it fired me up for the next one and I got the start I needed, didn’t make any mistakes on the first lap and I was able to ride my own race to the finish.”

Wilson Todd is on the verge of some stand out racing. Thrust into the MXD class at the 11th hour, Todd has now been the fastest qualifier in two out of the three rounds contested so far and only some falls at crucial times have cost him better results.

Todd was up front in race one when he miscued a rut and went down. He picked his bike back up and re-joined the field just outside the top 10. He battled hard the entire 20 minutes and landed in fourth place when the chequered flag flew.

A poor start in race two had Todd behind the eight ball right from the get go and that was compounded by a fall in the early stages of the race. With a sore knee he continued to fight his way back to 14th place and his 4-14 results gave him eighth overall for the round.

He maintains fifth place in the championship after round three.

“I made a couple of small mistakes in the opening laps of each race and when that happens, a lot of riders are able to pass. I need to focus more on consolidating my position at the start of the race and not fall down,” Todd explains.

“On the bike, I feel good and my fitness is also good so if I can cut out the first lap tip overs, then I think I can get myself on the podium in the coming rounds,” he said.

The GYTR Yamaha team now look to round four at Murray Bridge in South Australia for the next round of the MX Nationals. For more information and full results,
