CDR Rockstar Yamaha’s Jay Marmont turned in his usual gritty performance to take fifth place at the opening round of the Monster Energy Super X Championship in front of a sold out Energy Australia Stadium at Newcastle on Saturday Night.
Against a top class international field that included Chad Reed, US imports Justin Brayton and Josh Hansen as well as US based Australian Daniel Reardon, Marmont put together two consistent performances in the 12 lap legs to be well placed as the championship moves to Canberra.
Moto one saw Marmont slot into fourth place from the outset which he held all the way until the finish and not far from the leading trio. Moto two and Marmont didn’t get the start he required and then engaged in a race long battle to get back inside the top five. With a last lap pass on Tye Simmonds, Marmont took fifth for the moto and his combined results of 4-5 gave him fifth for the night.
“Moto one went well and I rode a strong, consistent race, but moto two proved just how important the start was and I got held up quite a bit dicing with the riders in the pack,” Marmont offered at the end of the night.
“This week my training is going to be all about starts and the first lap as it is so crucial for good results in Super X,” he concludes.
Team owner Craig Dack also feels Jay is well placed for the championship and thinks things will continue to improve as the championship unfolds.
“We are off and running and to be inside the top five at the opening round of any championship is where most riders would like to be. We still have some work to do, but overall we are happy with the way things went and believe Jay will only get better from here to the end of the championship in Brisbane.”
JGR Yamaha’s Justin Brayton (US) made a sensational Australian Super X debut taking third spot on his YZ450F. Brayton is in Australia for the opening two rounds of Super X as a guest of CDR Rockstar Yamaha and Yamaha Australia and showed great speed in both races.
Moto one saw Brayton charge back to fifth after a poor start but moto two had Brayton in the lead pack early and he went on to shadow race winner Chad Reed for the entire race finishing closely behind the ex world champion for a second place finish.
Unfortunately, the news wasn’t so good for CDR Rockstar Yamaha guest rider Ross Beaton who crashed and injured his shoulder during a qualifying race. Beaton showed plenty of promise in testing and in the practice sessions, but he miscued a tricky jump section and went down on his shoulder and was unable to finish the night.
Round two of the championship now moves to Canberra this Saturday Night and the CDR Rockstar Yamaha crew will be looking to move up the leader board in their quest for the Super X championship.
