CDR Rockstar Yamaha Strike Back at MX Nats

20 Jun 2011

A revitalized CDR Rockstar Yamaha bounced back with vengeance at round six of the 2011 Rockstar Energy MX Nationals held at Goanna Tracks, Coonabarabran over the weekend.

Jay Marmont and Josh Coppins claimed first and third respectively in the Pro Open class in a rewarding day for both the team and the riders and have their seasons back on track and set for a barnstorming finish to the nine round Australian Motocross Championship.

It’s been a successful month for the reigning champ, Jay Marmont. After the disappointment of the Toowoomba round, Marmont hit the road in search of racing and competition in an attempt to recapture his best form. Wins at Manjimup (WA) and the Queensland Championships saw Marmont enter the Coonabarabran round with renewed confidence and hunger.

Marmont put together a rock solid day in the four points paying races to take 5-1-2-3 positions to win the overall, his first for the season, and keep his recent win streak alive. Pre event testing ironed out all the issues and Jay combined beautifully with his CDR Rockstar Yamaha YZ450F and the AMA style track to score a well deserved and hard fought victory.

Marmont sits in fourth position in the premier Pro Open category, some 54 points from the lead, but with 300 points still available and the form that Marmont is in, this is far from over.

“I am proud of this win today as it didn’t come easy and we had to fight for it,” Marmont states. “The competition on the track is close and intense and there are no easy races any more so to win with the level of competition so high feels good.”

“I also must thank the entire staff of CDR Rockstar Yamaha that have put in a huge month between the last round to get the bike exactly how I wanted it. The technical staff did their job during the week and I did mine on the weekend, so it was a rewarding team effort today,” Marmont explains.

Josh Coppins also put in a huge effort to make the podium as he raced his way to third place for the round. Coppins finished the round with 3-5-1-4 places and unquestionably his charge to fifth place was the ride of the weekend.

Coppins fell on the opening lap of race two and by the time the dust and wreckage was cleared, the experienced New Zealander was all but last and a long way behind the pack. With the short seven lap format, Coppins went into damage control and set about gaining some points to keep his championship hopes alive. By lap five he was inside the top 20, lap six, he was just inside the top 10, then in the final lap he barged his way to fifth place in a ride that typifies the gritty Kiwi.

Coppins remains in third for the championship, only 32 points away from the red plate.

“Overall, I’m happy with the way the day went. I felt the bike worked well and my riding was at a good level. The second race fifth obviously hurts a little when the top guys in this class are pretty consistent, but at least I was able to salvage some reasonable points and keep myself in contention,” Coppins said.

Team Manager Craig Dack was justifiably proud of his troops and praised them all on a job well done.

“The results from this weekend really were a huge team effort. Gary and Shawn worked tirelessly since the last round, the mechanics Jason and Todd, prepared the bikes perfectly and the riders played their part on the track.”

“To finish with a 1-3 result was just the boost everyone in the team needed and hopefully this is just the beginning of a strong finish to the championship,” Dack signs off.
