Curtain and Olson Dominate at QR

26 Aug 2013

Yamaha Racing with Ipone teamsters Kevin Curtain and Rick Olson dominated their respective classes at round four of the Australian FX Superbike Championship, held at Queensland Raceway over the weekend.

Curtain turned in another perfect performance on his Formula Oz machine winning all three races contested and along with it the huge 75 points haul. Curtain now holds an 86 point lead in the championship over his nearest rivals and is looking good for championship success with just two rounds remaining.

Unfortunately, his day wasn’t as much fun in the FX Superbike category as a DNF in race two ruined any chance of a good round result. Curtain finished second in the opening race and fourth in the final leg, but a huge crash in race two left him battered, bruised and the bike much the same and he unable to finish.

As a result, he slipped back to second in the championship but the tight points’ battle at the top of the table will make for thrilling racing at the final rounds.

“It was a real up and down weekend,” Curtain explained. “It was nice to get the win in the Formula Oz class as I really enjoy racing that bike.

“The DNF in race two in the FX Superbike class cost me a lot of points and with only two rounds to go, it doesn’t leave me much time to make them back up. That’s how racing goes sometimes and I now just have to race my best at the final rounds to have a chance at winning the championship,” Curtain explains.

Rick Olson also enjoyed a class win with his 1-1-2 results in the three races in the FX600cc class. Olson was locked in a tight battle with a handful of riders in the ultra-competitive class but managed to take the race wins when required and lock down the overall victory.

The win at QR now has him 35 points clear of second place in the championship standings and with some smart racing at the final rounds, he can secure the championship win.

Like his teammate Curtain, Olson also struggled in the FX Superbike class with a DNF in one of the three races. He finished 14th for the round but maintained his solid third place in the championship standings.

“The 600cc was good; the 1000cc wasn’t so good,” Olson Laments. “Racing a 600cc bike around this track always provides close racing and every race had a good battle up the front. It’s nice to take the round win after three hard fought races.

“In the Superbikes, I got ran wide on one of the turns and as a result finished a fair way back in the first race which gives me a bad grid position for race two. I was pushing pretty hard to get back up front when I fell in that race, so it just wasn’t my weekend on the Superbike.”

“No doubt it was a tough weekend for our crew,” states team owner, John Redding. “The boys had an uncharacteristic weekend of falling off and no doubt it affected their results. It also placed huge strain on the team as they had to work hard throughout the weekend to keep them on track and their efforts didn’t go unnoticed.”

“Also, the YRD support guys impressed this weekend, with Mike Jones, Aiden Wagner and Callum Spriggs putting in some fines rides,” Redding ends.

The 2013 FX Superbike Championship will see the fifth round of the championship held at Sydney Motorsport Park on October 5 and 6.
