Kirk Gibbs is the dual NSW Motocross Champion after the final round at Nowra over the weekend

Gibbs Makes it a State Double

Serco Yoshimura Yamahas' Kirk Gibbs put the finishing touches on a successful campaign taking out both the Pro Opens and Pro Lites Championships after the final round of the NSW Motocross Championships held at Nowra over the weekend.

Gibbs entered the last round in control of both classes and just needed to ride intelligently to claim the state crowns on his YZ250F and YZ450F. But Gibbs wanted to win races as well and was in hot form throughout the day.

He roared to an impressive opening moto win on his YZ250F beating a host of national riders. Moto two looked to be heading down the same path as Gibbs took the lead after a Matt Moss mistake only to succumb to flat tyre and then withdrew from the race. Still his points lead was sufficient enough to take the championship win.

The Pro Open class was much the same for Gibbs. He comfortably won the opening moto to seal the state championships before having some issues in moto two and having to settle for second. He finished second for the round, on equal points with Lawson Bopping but lost on count-back yet locked down his second championship of the weekend.

“It might not be a National, but sometimes winning races you are expected to win can be harder. I came down to race in New South Wales to get some extra competition and ride some new tracks and I have been able to do that and win at the same time, so the time and energy has been worth it,” Gibbs explains.

It was a 1-2 finish in the championship for Yamaha riders with Yamaha NSW rider Luke Styke taking second place for the series. Styke was consistently up the front in the three round championship and second place is a well deserved reward for the hard working Styke.
