Liam Andrews finished second in both classes
Ty Sharp continues to improve and landed in fifth for the series

GYTR-YJR Podium Charge at Vic MX Champs

26 Jul 2017

The fourth and final round of 2017 Junior Victorian Motocross Championships was run last weekend at one of Victoria’s premier motocross tracks at Wonthaggi and with cold, wet and windy conditions in the week leading up to the event, riders and familes were preparing for a mud fest.

But fantastic work by the Dandenong MCC saw the track in prime condition to everyone’s surprise even with gale force winds all weekend.

Saturday saw Liam Andrews and Ty Sharp up on their YZ125 and YZ85 respectively. Liam was trying to defend his second-place position in the series, while Ty was looking to climb up the ranking for a top five finish overall.

Liam's day got off to a tough when he got stuck in a pile up followed by another small crash to limp home in 14th place in the opening moto. But he regrouped well for the last two races with a fourth and sixth place and that was enough to see him secure second in the championship.

Ty started his Saturday off with an awesome start and battled for the lead all the way to the finish finally settling for 2nd, showing his older competition how it's done. The next two motos Ty managed a fourth and a sixth to round out his day and he maintained fifth place overall in the 9—11 years 85cc class. Not bad for the young charger in his first year of competition on the 85.

Sunday Ty and Liam were racing again this time on their 65's and 250cc machines. Ty started Sunday off with a flying holeshot and a mistake free race to take the win and set the fastest lap of the day for the 65's.

Ty then took a huge tumble in the first turn of race two. He quickly sprang to his feet, ran to his bike and charged all the way to third place at the finish in a great ride. Race three was less eventful finishing a comfortable second. His 1-3-2 results gave him both second for the day and second for the championship.

“ I love riding this track and it's so close to home. I had some awesome races this weekend and finishing with fifth and second overall is pretty good and I’m happy with those results.

“I learned a lot this year so if I can keep improving and don’t make as many mistakes, I’m sure I can go even better,” Sharp said.

Liam had been working hard in the weeks leading up to this round and was looking forward to battling for a moto win or two. Race one Liam battled hard with both Rhys Budd then Bailey Malkiewicz to claim a strong second place but things weren’t so rosy for race two, where he struggled to find his groove and could only manage a fourth.

But, he saved his best ride of the day for last with another strong second place which got him 2nd on the day and the added bonus of moving up a place in the championship to take him to second overall.

“I'm so happy with my year so far, my first Victorian Championships on the big bikes ended up going pretty awesome. If you had of told me at the start of the year that I would end up second on both bikes, I would say you’re kidding yourself but I was able to do it,” he laughs.

“The next major race for me is the Australian Junior MX Champs at Horsham and that is a track I love so I can’t wait for that.”

“What a great way to wrap up the Victorian championships,” says Team Manager, Cameron Taylor. “Both guys raced well all weekend and either held their results or improved on them in the championships so it was a very positive end.

“Both Liam and Ty are a year younger than their main competition so if they keep working hard they will be hard to stop in 2018," he signs off.
