Kirk Gibbs made two trips to the podium at round one of the NSW MX Championships

Kirk Gibbs Winning Weekend at NSW MX Champs

28 Apr 2011

Serco Yoshimura Yamaha’s Kirk Gibbs ventured into enemy territory over the Easter weekend to contest the opening round of New South Wales Motocross Championships, held at Clarence in the Blue Mountains.

With a break in his national campaign, where he currently lies in second place in the Pro Lites division, Gibbs took to the road and made the 12 hour trek south from his Queensland base to keep racing and working on his riding.

The mission proved to be a successful one with Gibbs taking the round win in the Pro Open class on his YZ450F with a near perfect 2 -1 result in the two points paying races. Gibbs, a full time 250cc rider has taken delivery of a YZ450F to train on and use at regional events to sharpen his skills and is showing good form on the larger capacity bike.

Making it double duty over the weekend, Gibbs also contested his more familiar 250cc bike in the Pro Lites class. Overcoming a slow start in the opening moto, Gibbs took third before powering on strongly to take the moto win in race two. His 3-1 results were good enough for second overall for the round.

“I’m trying to race as much as possible and ride as many different tracks as possible while we have a month break between the national rounds,” Gibbs states.

“The weekend went pretty well and it was nice to ride a new track, although the weather was real cold.”

“I enjoy riding both classes as it keeps me busy and increases my fitness. I find that riding the 450 has helped and because it’s new, it keeps me fresh and keen to race.”

“I’m going to do a race at Coolum this weekend and I aim to continue to improve my riding again so I have a strong showing at round four of the MX Nationals in South Australia in a couple of weeks,” Gibbs finishes.
