Joel Wightman holeshots on his YZ250F
Brendon Walther charges towards second place on his YZ85

NSW–YJR Turn Up the Heat in State MX Champs

13 Jun 2012

Round two of the NSW Motocross Championships was ran at the Lakes circuit, about an hour and a half drive north of Sydney, over the Queen’s birthday long weekend with NSW YJR teamster looking for top results.

YJR NSW rider Joel Wightman stamped his authority on the 15 years 150cc 2 stroke and 250 four stroke classes, while Brendon Walther showed he is a force to be reckoned with in the 12-U14’s 85cc class.

A less than favourable weather forecast turned out to be wrong and riders were treated to a well-prepped track considering the wet week that led into the event.

Joel Wightman set the fastest lap in qualifying on his YZ 125 on Saturday backing up the speed with 1-1-2 moto finishes and taking home the overall win for the round. Sunday proved much the same, again setting the fastest lap in qualifying then piloting his YZ 250F to 2-1-1 moto finishes. Those results earned Joel the overall for the day, making it a perfect weekend for him.

“I’ve kept working hard since round one and I really wanted to have a strong weekend here at Lakes. It was a great weekend for me; I had one small tip over in a corner, other than that I didn’t make too many mistakes. My bikes were awesome and I even pulled couple of holeshots. They worked great all weekend. I’m looking forward to Coonabarabran, I really enjoy that track and it will be great fun racing there, he said.”

Brendon Walther kicked off the weekend on his YZ 125, the first major event for him on the bigger bike. He showed some great speed on the new bike and worked his way forward in every race. With some more experience starting the 125 he will begin the races a little closer to the front. He finished the day ninth overall with 9-13-8 moto finishes.

Sunday saw ‘Brenno’ lining up on his YZ 85 and back on the more familiar machine. He qualified fifth fastest but missed the early window for a hot lap as a yellow flag was out for the remainder of the session. He came out swinging in the first moto and rode to a strong second place. He backed that up with a win in moto two and a fourth in the final race after getting squeezed out on the start. His 2-1-4 moto finishes gave him second overall for the weekend.

“This weekend went really well, it was good to win a race on the 85 and I really enjoy racing the 125 too. I’m happy with a second overall and really want to finish strong at Coonabarabran in a few weeks.”

Team manager Shane Booth was full of praise for Joel and Brendon. “The boys did everything very well this weekend; they rode smart and fought hard out on the track. Their hard work is paying off and they both set fastest laps in their classes at times over the weekend, which shows their speed is on the mark. I’d like to congratulate them and their families on an awesome weekend.”

The final round of the NSW Motocross Championships is at Goanna Tracks, Coonabarabran in July.
