Courtney Knight, Tamara Gray and Kiera Smith make an all Yamaha podium at the QLD MX Champs

QLD Yamaha Girls Dominate State Championships

27 Apr 2010

Yamaha’s girls proved too good at the 2010 Queensland Motocross Championships, taking out the top three positions in the final standings. Queensland Yamaha Girls Team riders Courtney Knight and Tamara Gray finished 1-2, with Burdekin Motorcycles Kiera Smith placing third.

The final two day event at Roma in the south west was a true test of skill, as the track formed massive ruts amongst the super slick conditions. The round results were identical as the championship with Knight, Gray and Smith forming an all Yamaha podium at the Roma event.

Sensational Courtney Knight (Team Moto Yamaha Moorooka) took her first senior women’s motocross championship after wrapping up the final round with a win.   The 16 year old had been a model of consistency and tied up the number one plate with one race to go.

“I wasn’t sure how I was really going to go in my first year of seniors and I don’t think it has really sunk in yet that I managed to win the title.  I have spent the last couple of years working towards this goal and it’s a dream and almost surreal to finally be here.”

“I couldn’t be here without the support of my family though. They are there behind the scenes each week supporting me to the full.  For that I need to say a massive thank you to my Dad, Mum and brother Troy.”

QYGT team mate Tamara Gray (Bayside Yamaha) came home strong with a second overall with 1-2-2 finishes on the day, easily securing herself the number 2 plate for next season.

“I am happy that I finished the Championship on a high.  I hadn’t had a lot of race time in the lead up to the titles after my knee reconstruction last year.  So I am pleased with my improvement over the series.”

"Second was a great result, and it was hard fought for me this year.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and it has continued to give the motivation to push forward in my racing – as I am far from done yet.”

Kiera Smith’s performance of 8-3-3 was easily enough to secure her third place in the championship.  Smith the 2009 Champion was the North Queenslander on a podium of Southern Queensland residents.

“I came in to this last round knowing the points were close and that I had to be consistent.  That crash in the first moto cost me dearly, so I just knuckled down in the last two moto’s and just tried to stay on.”

“I managed to do that, and I am stoked to come away with a podium and make it an all blue one!
