QLD Yamaha Junior Racing Kick off 2011 with Podium Feast

28 Mar 2011

After a six week delay due to the Queensland floods, the opening round of the Shell Advance Sunshine State Motocross Series finally roared to life with the Warwick club hosting the 500 strong rider turnout over the weekend.

With a tweaked format that saw juniors race on Saturdays and seniors’ race on Sundays, it was the first hit out for the Yamaha Junior Racing Team in Queensland and the duo of Joel Dinsdale and Wilson Todd turned in a respectable performance with three podium positions from the four classes contested.

The past six months have been an extremely emotional time for Joel Dinsdale and his family. A shoulder injury at the Australian Junior Nationals in October then the tragic passing of his father in February meant Dinsdale’s life has been upturned of late.

Still, the super tough Queenslander dug in and gave 100% to finish up with third place overall in the 13 to 14 years 250F class and also third place in the 13 to 15 years 150cc division. On his YZ250F, Dinsdale powered to race wins in motos one and three, but a fall in moto two while leading the race, cost him the round win.

He also put in spirited rides on his YZ125 with 2-6-3 to finish third. Falls in races two and three also put paid to any chance of taking the round victory.

“I am glad I was able to just get this race out of the way,” said a relieved Dinsdale at the completion of racing. “Today I wanted to stay safe, not do anything stupid and get through the day.”

“Now, I can head back home, try to get back into my routine and come back at round two with a bit more riding and training under my belt,” Dinsdale finishes.

Wilson Todd is back for 2011 and has made the jump to the 12 to 15 years 85cc class. In the three races contested, Todd was a front runner battling for race wins and leading several laps. Todd finished in second place overall on the back of his 2-8-3 results.

He also made his debut on the 125cc machine in the 13 to 15 years 125 class. Todd, small in stature but big in heart made a good fist of things in his first outing landing in 11th overall, but more importantly learnt plenty on the bigger capacity bike.

“My goals today were to run in the top three on the 85cc and top 10 on the 125, so I was pretty close to that. I’m pretty tired now as riding the 125 on a rough track like Warwick took it out of me, but I had a great time on it and look forward to round two in a few weeks time,” Todd said.

The Queensland Yamaha Junior Racing Team will next compete at Tivoli Raceway near Brisbane for round two of the Sunshine State Series on March 16 / 17.
