Hunter Lawrence has locked up the Sunshine State MX series win on his YZ125
Levi Rogers hit the podium again in second place in the 9-11 years 85cc

QLD YJR Close in on SSMX Success

14 Jun 2015

After five rounds of the Shell Advance Sunshine State Motocross series, the Queensland Yamaha Junior Racing team of Hunter Lawrence and Levi Rogers have all but locked in their podium positions for the series.

Tivoli Raceway, west of Brisbane, hosted the fifth round and it proved to be another enterprising day for the team with both guys tasting plenty of success.

Hunter Lawrence has wrapped up the 13-15 years 125 class with one round remaining after another dominant day at Tivoli. He again won all three motos and so far has been undefeated on his YZ125 in 2015. He holds a 116 point lead over his nearest rival and with only 105 points available from each round, Lawrence can’t be beaten in the series.

He also holds a handy point lead in the 15 years 250cc class with an 85point gap back to second place. Tivoli again proved to be a happy hunting ground for the Sunshine Coast teenager with a perfect three wins from three starts. All it will take is a smart opening moto at the final round in Coolum to secure his second series win but Lawrence will continue to push as he works towards much larger goals to finish his 2015 season.

After 28 races, across both his 125 and 250cc, Lawrence is yet to be beaten in the Sunshine State series this year. But with a world championship coming up as well as the Australian Junior Motocross championship and a supercross series all on the horizon, Lawrence will continue to work hard.

“Another good day today and it provided plenty of challenges as the rain came during the day, changing the track conditions drastically. The Tivoli track has been changed recently and I like what they have done with it as the corners form up really well and the jumps are good fun.

“My bikes were again awesome and it was good to have my Dad here today for the first time this season.

“I’m now heading to New Zealand to spend a couple of weeks working with Josh Coppins as part of my preparations for the World Junior MX Championships in Spain during July. It has been awesome that Yamaha Australia have been able to arrange this trip for me and I look forward to learning from Josh and his experiences of racing at the highest level,” Lawrence explains.

Levi Rogers slotted his Yamaha YZ85cc into second place in the 9-11 years 85cc class. Rogers racked up 2-3-2 results during the day and overcame bad starts and the muddy conditions to be in some spirited rides.

With one round remaining in the series, Rogers currently sits in second place overall behind Jett Lawrence and a comfortable margin back to third place.

“I had no crashes today, so that was pretty cool,” Rogers laughs. “To run with Jett I needed to get up there a little earlier in the race but he is riding awesome at the moment.

“The mud in the final race made things tricky and I probably need to practice riding in the mud a little more. We don’t get much rain where I live in central Queensland but next time it does, I’m going riding.”

The sixth and final round of the Sunshine State Series will take place at Coolum on July 4 and 5. With the event already postponed twice due to rain, let’s hope it will go ahead under sunny skies this time.
