Kirk Gibbs came home strong in the final two motos to finish the day in sixth place.
Ford Dale again showed blistering speed, but a crash in moto three derailed his train.

Rollercoaster Ride For Serco Yoshimura Yamaha At MX Nats

14 Mar 2011

It was a day of complete opposites as Serco Yoshimura Yamaha kicked off their 2011 MX Nationals championship aspirations at the Broadford Motorsports complex in Victoria.

Entering the opening round on the back of a strong 2010 season and also plenty pre season testing, the Serco team hit the ground running in the official practice and qualifying sessions with Ford Dale and Kirk Gibbs taking the fastest lap times and earning the first and second pick in the all important starting gate selections.

As the first of two back to back motos fired from the start line, disaster struck early when Kirk Gibbs was running in a solid top five position on the opening lap when he fell from his YZ250F and upon getting to his feet was unable to start the bike. With nearly a lap completed by the rest of the field, the team pulled Kirk in and got him ready for the second race and he registered no points from the opening moto.

Race two fared little better when Kirk was hit from behind and spun around. Again he was challenging for a podium position at the time. He mounted a charge and climbed his way back to eighth but still disappointed with the result.

After the lunch break, Gibbs came out swinging and in sync with the rollercoaster ride Serco Yamaha endured on the day, Gibbs finished 3-2 in the final two races to salvage some good points and round out the day in sixth place.

“It was just one of those days. I tried hard and felt I was riding well, but just had no luck and got no reward,” said an angry Gibbs. “I put myself in good positions in every race only to have something happen in the first two and ruin the day.”

“The positives are that my speed is good and the bike is working well, so I am confident I can rebound well at round two.”

Ford Dale also went through the highs and lows of racing at Broadford. He raced to fifth in the first moto after a bad start then took a convincing moto victory in race two. But just as things were looking up, Dale crashed heavily in race three and was unable to finish the moto.

Pained and sore, he lined up for moto four and managed to grind out a 13th place finish to end a tough day for both the riders and the team.

“I’m not sure what happened when I crashed in race three, it all happened pretty fast. I know I hit the ground pretty hard and it ruined what was shaping up to be a good days’ racing,” Ford offered.

“But we have a long way to go, so I have to put it behind me, focus on the next round and get myself back into this championship,” Dale finishes.

Round two hits Appin Raceway in Sydney on April 2 where the Serco Yamaha team will be hoping for a change of luck, or at the very least, just no luck at all.
