SA YJR Dominate the Sands of Ceduna

17 Jun 2015

Round two of the South Australian Motocross Championships were ran over weekend in the sands of Ceduna under perfect weather conditions. The SA YJR team were set to continue their winning ways from round one and really set the bar for the remainder of the series. Once again The Larwood brothers set their fields on fire while Taj Gow Smith backed up Alex to take second place in both his classes.

Thomas Larwood kicked things off in the perfect fashion, ripping a holeshot and pulling a big gap on the field before taking the race win. The next two motos went much the same way, holeshots and big victory margins, making it three wins from three races.

Thomas's skills and determination really shone through in the challenging conditions. Thomas came into the weekend having lost a close school friend the week leading up to the round, so for him to display the performance he put on was a huge credit to him and his ability to strive forward.

"I'm happy to get this win as it’s been a challenging week. My bike ran so good, my Dunlop MX11's hooked up awesome, my suspension was awesome and my trusty YZ125 was on fire," said a very happy Thomas.

Alex Larwood once again showed his brilliance as he holeshoted all six races on the day and went on to comfortably win each race by over half a lap. His starts weren't always the best off the gate but his aggression and determination got him to the lead by the exit of the first turn. Alex pushed hard to the finish in each race today which was really good to see when he had such big leads, it was a very impressive performance from our young gun.

"I'm pumped today as the Ceduna track was so good to ride, so thank you to the club on a great job. My bikes handled sweet and I’m very happy to win both classes. I can't wait for the next round at Keith," Alex said.

Taj Gow-Smith also came into the event having lost a family friend this past week. Taj had one job on his mind on the weekend and that was to do his best. Riding the two classes in with Alex, Taj wanted to repeat his back up performance from round 1. While running second in the opening moto, Taj had a huge crash which shook him up but he managed to remount and take a third for that moto. For the remainder of the day Taj reeled off five second place finishes to take second behind Alex in both classes.

"It was emotional today but I am pumped to finish second again on both bikes. I'm keen to get back to Keith for the next round as I had a great race there last year and I hope to get a bit closer to Alex there,” said Gow Smith.

SAYJR Team Manager Shane Metcalfe was very impressed by his young guns. “Thomas once again showed a clean pair of heels and his riding has stepped up this year. Alex did awesome today, he pushed it to the finish and had lap times that would see him finish in the top three in the highest junior classes which is very impressive from the small wheel YZ85 gun.

“Young Taj did a great job today, with all the emotion in him he still managed to take a couple of seconds and keep the SAYJR 1-2 punch going in the 85cc class.

“With this being the only real sand track in SA hopefully it puts a bit of confidence in the boys heading to WA for the Junior Nationals later in the year,” Metcalfe said.

The next round will be at Andy Caldecott Park in Keith for round three on the 25th of July.
