Styke Takes Third In Lites Super X

21 Nov 2011

Serco Yoshimura Yamaha racer, Luke Styke took home third place in the overall championship standings after the fifth and final round of the Monster Energy Super X that was completed in front of a good crowd at Ipswich, Queensland, over the weekend.

Styke, who started the year on limited support, got the call up to do the Super X series by the factory Yamaha Lites squad and has taken that opportunity and ran with it to claim his best finish of his career in the series and land on the podium and in some very esteemed company.

Unfortunately the final round didn’t go exactly to script for Styke who finished fifth on the night and struggled with the conditions.

“I just couldn’t seem to get a good feel for the track in the final and didn’t flow as I would have liked. The dirt had gone really hard pack and the bike was moving around a lot and that’s not usually the way I ride.”

“I had a real opportunity to get second for the championship tonight but if someone had of told me at the start of the season I would finish third, then I probably would have taken it, so I can’t be too disappointed.”

“One thing it has done for me is give me confidence that with the right bike and the right team behind me, I can run up the front so thanks to Serco Yamaha for giving me that opportunity.”

Styke’s team mate, Kirk Gibbs, bounced back to form at the final round taking third place in the 15 lap main event. Gibbs, who has struggled with the short sprint formats of the opening four rounds, used the full 15 laps to ride himself back into form and a strong way to finish out the season.

Gibbs rounded out the championship in 10th place, mainly due to entering the series with little preparation due to a broken collar sustained just three weeks prior to round one.

“Tonight was a much better result and something that I should be capable of at every round,” Gibbs explained. “I was able to get into the race, work my way forward and end up on the podium which is where I belong.”

“It’s been a while since I have been up here before, so it all feels new and exciting,” Gibbs laughed.
