Todd Fires First Shot at QLD SX Champs

23 Nov 2014

16 year old Wilson Todd kicked off the 2014 Queensland Supercross Championships in perfect fashion with victory in the Pro Lites class at the opening round of the series, held on the weekend.

In front of an enthusiastic crowd, Todd showed he was going to be a contender in the final after battling Serco Yamaha duo of Jay Wilson and Luke Clout in the heat races and he wasn’t scared to go bar to bar with his more experienced rivals.

When the final roared off, Todd hit the front as the field hit the whoops for the first time and took control of the race. He fought off a spirited challenge from Jay Wilson in the early laps before getting a comfortable margin over Wilson by the halfway point.

With a few seconds separating the lead pair, Todd was able to manage the lead with smart riding and good speed and took the win in the 12 lap final seven seconds clear of Jay Wilson and fellow Yamaha rider, Jesse Madden in third. Luke Clout finished fifth after a poor start.

“That was good fun,” Todd said moments after the race. “I managed to get past Jay on the first lap and then I made sure he couldn’t get me back in the early laps. Once I was clear by a couple of bike lengths, I was able to ride my own lines and focus on going fast.

“I really like riding supercross and it’s cool to have the crowd out here to watch us. Thank you to Robbie Marshall and his people for making the event happen and also the GYTR Yamaha team for continuing to support me.”

Hunter Lawrence made his debut on Yamaha riding for the QLD Yamaha Junior Racing on a YZ250F in the Junior Lites class. Lawrence was in fine form and won each of the three races contested and looks to have really gelled with his new ride.

“I haven’t been on the Yamaha that long but I already feel good on the bike and I really like riding it. I was pitting with the GYTR Yamaha team and they were a huge help during the day.

“It was a good way to start my time with Yamaha and I look forward to winning more races for them,” Hunter ends.

Round two of the championship will be on December 6 at Jimboomba, just south of Brisbane. For more information on the series, www.qldsupercross.com.au and for a full list of results, www.mylaps.com
