VIC YJR Rollercoaster Opening Round of State Champs

5 Apr 2012

The 2012 Victorian Yamaha Junior Racing Team (Vic –YJR) of Cody Dyce, Matt Hopkins-Talty and Wade Kirkland travelled to Ballarat over the weekend for the first round of the 2012 state junior championships.

A walk of the track early Saturday morning revealed a very dry and hard pack surface the riders had to face for the day but all were excited to get their season and championship under way.

Cody has been working extremely hard over the off season to get the most from his racing  and it really surfaced in Ballarat as he raced with more speed and aggression than ever before. Contesting the 9 to Under 12 years class on his YZ85SW he got off to an average start in the first race but quickly caught the leaders and was sitting in third place when he had a small slip over in a watered and slippery turn. After getting going again he was able to fight back to 3rd at the finish which was a great effort.

In race two he started about the same but charged to the front where he stayed to the finish and took the race win. Race three was all Dyce as he led from the opening lap until the checkered flag and with 3-1-1 results he comfortably won the round.

Matt Hopkins was next up for the day and ready to get back into his racing after having nearly a year off the bike with various injuries. His goal was to have a solid weekend and improve with every race. Race one he got a pack start and fought well to secure eighth at the finish which was great since it's his first race in 12 months.

A great start put Matt 3rd but  he soon felt the effects of a rear flat tyre and was called into the pits to end his race. Race three was a tough one with Matt getting away slowly and finding the dry and dusty track very tough to race. Matt finished with 8-DNF-14.

Day two of the event and we were greeted with a much improved track that was ripped and well watered which made for far better races conditions.

Wade races his YZ85 in the 12-16yrs 85BW class.. Wade really impressed over the whole day with his speed and racing technique but bad starts really cost him better overall results. He faught hard in all races and battled hard to catch the leaders, his results of 5-21-5 for 10th overall were not where he can finish with better starts.

Matt also raced on Sunday on his YZ125 and had a much better day with much improved starts and having spent a lot more time on his 125. Matt faught hard all day to secure his finishes of 10-6-10 for 7th overall.

New team manager, Cameron Taylor was on hand to support his team and offer advice to help them through the day.

“I think it was a really positive start to the season and with some work on starts in particular all there results will improve greatly. We all look forward to round two at Broadford circuit in a month to show what we have,” Taylor said.
