Sam Martin finishes his state motocross championships strongly at Wonthaggi

VYJDT On The Podium at VIC Junior MX Champs

1 Sep 2010

With the Victorian Yamaha Junior Development Team riders of Matthew Hopkins-Talty and Sam Martin missing a complete of the Victorian Junior Motocross Championships, they were always going to be on the back foot for a top overall finish.

And battle they did with Mathew inside the Top 10 of the 85cc division and Sam finishing in fourth overall in the 250 A grade and second overall just three points in front of his teammate Joel Milesevic third in the A grade150 class.

Matthew Hopkins-Talty (K & J Motorcycles) the junior member of the team has still got some work to do with his starts as they have been his biggest downfall of late in the highly competitive 12/16 A grade 85BW class. All day average starts meant Matthew had plenty of work in front of him to get a decent result. That was compounded by first turn crashes in races one and two that left Matthew charging from the rear of the field. He set about showing that he has speed and the ability to charge through, both races managed to bring it home in a credible seventh.

His last race of the championship was not one he would have be talking about too long either. Another crash and dead last again but this time he had nothing left and took along time to get going and could only manage a 13th, for a round overall in eighth but on a positive still inside the Top 10 for the championship.

Joel Milesevic (Peter Stevens Geelong) also had one of those tough days at the office. Sitting second place of the 150cc class, 25 points clear of third before the weekend started, all he had to do was be consistent to finish the championship in a strong position. Joel was frustrated, as was all concerned after his uninspiring first couple of races with 10-12 results, life couldn’t get much harder for him heading in to the final race.

Joel managed to find some fight in the final moto, but could still only manage a fifth place and his combined scores of 10-12-5 left him in 10th place overall for the round and third in the championship.

Sam Martin (Peter Stevens Ferntree Gully) put together one of the most consistent performances of the weekend taking five podium finishes in the six races contested. Even after injury and missing one complete round, the no fuss Sam just goes about getting the job done and is always there fighting it out at the top.

In the 150cc A grade class the Foster/Hastings speedster finished with a string of second places to take second for the round and also in the Championship. And ably backed that up with a 4-3-3 for third round overall on the day and fourth in the 250 A Grade Championship.
