Matthew Hopkins-Talty on his way to a very credible third overall at Mnza Park, Ballarat

VYJDT Start Strongly in State Champs

26 Apr 2010

The Victorian Yamaha Junior Development Team hit the confines of Monza Park in Ballarat for the opening round of the Victorian Junior Motocross Championships held over the weekend.

With lead up rain, the track was in perfect condition and the team put in a solid performance with Matthew Hopkins-Talty claiming an excellent third overall A grade 85cc class and Joel Milesevic fourth overall in the A grade 100/150 2stroke. Sam Martin finished second overall A Grade 100/150 2stroke and fourth on his YZ250F. All riders are well placed in the multi-round championship.

Matthew Hopkins-Talty (K & J Motorcycles)
The Kilmore Flyer had an excellent weekend and fired off with two third places in the opening two motos. Moto three didn’t fare quite as well as Matthew was involved in a first turn pile up that saw
him rejoin the race way down the list. He fought on bravely and managed to race home in 11th spot and snare the final step of the podium in the 12 to 15 years 85cc.

Joel Milesevic (Peter Stevens Geelong)
Local Ballarat boy Joel Milesevic was looking for a big weekend at his home town event but suffered with crashes and bad luck to round out the day in fourth place overall in the 13 to15 years 125cc two stroke class. His 2-7-5 moto finishes weren’t reflective of the speed and determination Joel raced with but running fourth after a challenging day means he is still well in contention.

Sam Martin (Peter Stevens Ferntree Gully)
Sam continued to show that he is a genuine threat to all before him with in the 15 years division making come from behind charges in both his 150cc and 250cc classes. His 3-3-3-2 moto finishes were good enough for second overall on his YZ125 and have him well placed for a charge at the championship.

Program changes throughout the day left the 15 years 250cc class difficult to workout. With over 40 riders entered, two grids were used in the opening moto, but with rider numbers dropping the field was the combined for the final two, all in 40 rider races. Martin held strong for 4-3-4 finishes to see him come home in fourth place.

“The team put in a strong performance and all the riders are fit and ready for round two. Every one of them is in the hunt to take out a state championship, so it was a very positive start for the team,” suggests team manager, Rosco Holden.
