VYJDT are off to a great start in 2010

VYJDT Wins Gippsland Series Opener at Wonthaggi

23 Mar 2010

The Victorian Yamaha Junior Development Team kicked off the year in fine style at the opening round of the Gippsland Series at the Wonthaggi track over the weekend.

The Gippsland series is the strongest regional series in Victoria with over 500 riders competing at the two day event and they were greeted with sunny skies and a fast race track.

All three riders put on a strong display with new team member Sam Martin taking both A Grade 150/250 classes, strongly backed up by a growing speedster in Joel Milesevic taking second in the A grade150 class. Matthew Hopkins-Talty moved up an

age group for 2010 but showed good speed in his debut hit out in the 12/16 A grade for a sixth overall.

Matthew Hopkins-Talty (K & J Motorcycles) is still the youngest member of VYJDT and as mentioned has made the big step into the 12 to 16 years A grade 85cc division. Matthew showed good speed and consistent starts to post sixth overall. This is a development year for Hopkins-Talty, but with 7-5 finishes in the first two motos, he now knows he can run near the front. Only a fall in the final race and the resulting fourteenth place roped him to sixth, but the future looks promising for the speedy youngster.

Joel Milesevic (Peter Stevens Geelong) is the current 12 to 13 years Australian 85cc champion and wants to continue his good form in 2010. Joel went through a massive growth spurt in the off season going from size 8 to size 12 boots. And that’s not the only thing thats happened, he now looks stronger and, unfortunately for the competition, also looks faster.

With a move to the A grade 125/150 class and looking comfortable on the bigger 144cc bike Joel went 3-1- 2 for excellent second overall. The highlight for Joel was in race two where he holeshotted and lead from start to finish, fighting off a last lap and last corner attack by his new team mate Sam Martin.

Sam Martin (Peter Stevens Ferntree Gully) joined VYJDT for 2010 and has come in to the season with a big off season of training and preparation behind him. Martin arrived at Wonthaggi with one thing on his mind, to let the competition know he is in for a big year and win.

Win he did, taking the 125/150 A grade Class with 1-2 -1 finishes in the very competitive 250cc A grade class. Sam backed that up with 4-1-1 finishes in the 125/150cc two stroke class putting on a display of lightning corner speed. Once getting to a comfortable lead, Sam was able to take his foot off the gas and bring it home and take the round win.

It was very satisfying opening to the series for VYJDT and armed with the new YZ250F and the ultra powerful YZ85 and YZ144, there is no reason why the winning can't continue.
