Wellard/CLAAS/Yamaha riders were met with perfect conditions for the first junior Motocross Championship round at Coastal Park Henderson south of Perth. After a long dry summer the event organisers were blessed with enough rain during the week to make the circuit ideal for racing.

Liam Whisler (Mandurah City Yamaha) has stepped up to the 250F division riding in the 13-U15 age group. This gives him the chance to not only fight for the title but the opportunity to run the coveted number one plate next year should he win the Championship. Liam has been training hard and was in fine form leading up to the weekend.

The first event of the year bought out the pre-race nerves and Whisler made a small mistake during the first race and then had to work hard for his fourth place finish. Moto two saw things improve and Whisler was in a tight battle for the lead, ultimately coming up just short and settling for second place.

The final moto had Whisler up the front and again he crossed the line in second place. His 4-2-2 results made for a consistent start to the year but something he would like to improve on.

"Today was tough as I never really felt good about my riding. My starts just needed to be a little better so I don't waste time getting through the pack,” Whisler said.

“My YZ250F was working awesome but I let myself down by not being able to get the passes made when I needed to. I finished second overall so I suppose I should be happy with that but I know I have the speed to win, so I need to make it happen at the next round.”

Jared Connor (Five Star Yamaha) showed he was a good inclusion to this year’s team as he powered his YZ85cc to the teams’ second podium for the day. After taking some time off in 2012, the Kensington school boy was back, and though a little race rusty, showed he has not lost any skill.

Three good starts saw him placed near the front of the field and a small crash in race one was his only blemish for the day. A good battle in the last Moto sealed enough points for Jared to claim third spot on the podium and in the Championship hunt.

“It feels good to be back racing but I am pretty tired as riding this sand really takes it out of you. My goal was to get on the podium and I hard to work hard in that last race to get here after my first race fall. I was pretty nervous at the start of the day because I have not race for a while but once the gate dropped it was awesome to be racing again,” Connor explains.

“The first events of the year are always interesting and can go good or bad depending on how you manage your riders on the day. Two podiums is a cool way to start so now we will look at the areas where we can improve and go to Bunbury with some good momentum,” Team Manager Peter Strickland commented.
