Wellard/BRM/Yamaha rider Mat Fabry (Five Star Yamaha) has repaid his team’s support this season by bringing home the West Australian 85cc Big Wheel Championship. As one of the youngest riders in the 12– U16yrs field Fabry lead most of the eighteen race series clinching the title with a win on the weekend in the last round held at the Wanneroo circuit.

Clear blue skies and temperatures in mid-twenties was the order of the day as the Serpentine charger took control of the meeting from the first moto.

“I felt really good today and just knew I was going to do well,” Fabry said. “We have worked really hard to fine tune my sand riding lately and my YZ85 never missed a beat all day. We made some suspension and tuning changes leading up to the meeting and I could not have been happier with the result.”

As usual the deep sand of Wanneroo got really rough by the end of the day but Fabry showed he was more than up to the challenge.

“We had our Fox suspension in today and it was awesome, the more the track roughed up the better I liked it. I clinched the title in the second Moto which was cool so in the last I had no pressure and just enjoyed the race,” he finished with.

Team mate Liam Whisler (Mandurah City Yamaha) also had a good day taking second for the championship in the premier 15yrs 250F class. Whisler was locked in a fierce battle right to the end with only a few points separating him from third in the title.

“Today was one of my last rides before moving to seniors next year and I wanted to go out with a win, but a small crash in moto one saw me just come up a few points short,” Whisler commented.

“I’m pretty happy with how I rode and am looking forward to the junior Nationals in NSW in a few weeks. My YZF250 was perfect today and my Bridgestone tyres hooked up well out of the gate which made it a lot easier to fight for the win,” he explained.

Team Manager Peter Strickland was delighted with his riders. “Mat and Liam have done a fantastic job this season for the team. Both riders were in tough classes and showed why they are among the quickest junior motocross racers in the state,” he had to say.

“They have represented Wellard, BRM, Yamaha and all our advertising partners with a lot of determination and heart on the circuit and professionalism of it and I could not have been prouder of their achievements this season.”

Both the boys head off to the Australian junior Motocross National’s at Appin in New South Wales in a couple of weeks to pit their skills against the best in Australia. They will represent W.A. as part of the National Yamaha racing program and be competing for an Australian Championship in their respective classes.
