Wilson Todd Extends Lead in MXD Championship

3 Aug 2015

GYTR Yamaha’s Wilson Todd put together a consistent weekend of racing to extend his lead to 18 points after round eight of the MX Nationals wrapped up on the weekend.

The tight Nowra circuit played host to round eight of the championship and Todd was to gain valuable points in the championship as it heads towards the final rounds.

Todd again qualified fastest but didn’t get the best start in race one and had to make some passes in his pursuit of race leader, Jaiden Rykers. He moved into second place and was five seconds down on the lead and that gap yo-yoed as the pair traded lap times. Rykers took the win with Todd in second place.

Moto two and Todd took control of the race on lap two and went to work. Rykers slotted in behind again, the pair separated themselves from the pack. Todd built up a three second lead and looked to have things under control when he made a big mistake in a tight turn at the back of the circuit that allowed Rykers to close in. Rykers made a pass with two laps remaining and that’s how it finished, with Todd in second place.

Wilson now holds an 18 point lead with two rounds remaining and knows he is in for a fight to win this championship.

“The last two rounds I was in position to win the final motos but I have made a mistake will just a couple of laps to go, so I’m not real happy about that. I felt I rode the last moto pretty well but I need to stay focused right until the very end.

“We have a two week break now before we go to Toowoomba so there is time to get things sorted and ensure I come out swinging at the final two rounds,” Todd ends.

Mitch Evans had a tough day by his high standards, falling in both races to finish up equal third on the day, but fourth on a count back. Evans didn’t get a great jump in moto one but fought his way through to fourth place in a solid ride.

Moto two and Evans was back in the pack but charged his way through to third by mid race distance and was looking good for his third podium in succession when he stalled the bike and dropped several positions. He clawed his way back to fifth place but his 4-5 scores tied him with Zak Small and Jesse Madden for third overall.

“It wasn’t my best day,” Mitch said with disappointment. “I struggled to ride the track the way I wanted to ride it and couldn’t really get going. My starts weren’t great either and that didn’t help.

“The next round is at Toowoomba which is a track I have never raced before so I’m looking forward to racing there and redeeming myself,” Evans ends.

The GYTR Yamaha team will be out for a strong finish to the season with rounds nine and ten on back to back weekends at Toowoomba and Coolum respectively. Both riders want to finish the season in top form and look forward to the challenge of racing two great tracks.
