Sam Martin finished fifth
Shaun Redhead is back on track and working hard to regain fitness and speed

Wounded GYTR Yamaha Soldiers Battle Bravely at MX Nats

22 May 2012

Both GYTR Yamaha racers entered the fifth round of the 2012 MX Nationals under an injury cloud with Sam Martin carrying an ankle jury from a training incident in the days leading up to the event while Shaun Redhead still coming to terms with a mending hand from the opening round.

Despite the injuries, both riders worked hard to achieve some good results with Martin claiming fifth and Redhead in 11th for the round.

Sam Martin came into the event in second place just 11 points out of the championship lead and determined to narrow the gap. A fall in training during the week prior to the race didn’t dampeb his spirits and he opened his account strongly in the back to back races taking fifth and second and closing the gap to the series leader to just six points.

But the hard work came undone in the final moto when he fell in the early stages of the races charging his way forward and after remounting could only manage 12th place.

The fifth for the round has dropped him to fourth overall in the standings at the half way point but only 22 points separate the top four riders with 15 motos remaining and plenty of time to make a run for the championship win.

“I really let myself down in that last race,” said a frustrated Martin. “I was inside the top five or six and tried to make a pass when I got a little cross rutted and fell over. After that, I just couldn’t get my flow back and didn’t race the way I should.”

“Its back to work for the next five weeks and time to make it happen in the next few rounds if I have any hope of winning this thing.”

It’s been seven weeks since Shaun Redhead broke his hand and toes at the season opener and despite doing the Wonthaggi race a few weeks ago, it probably set him back in terms of his recovery.

The Murray Bridge race saw Redhead able to get some riding in before the week and turn in a much improved performance. He rounded the day out in 11th place with 11-19-9 results with the 19th coming after a first turn pile up and a charge from near last place.

“It’s obviously not the result I want but I was at least able to ride pain free and with some more intensity than I did at Wonthaggi. The third moto was good as I was able to get into a good flow and click off laps that will only help me.”

“I have a heap of races lined up to contest during the five week break in the MX Nationals so my plan is to be back to 100% for the Hervey Bay round and start contesting for race and round wins.”
