Knight (158) and Gray (155) going bar to bar at Mareeba

Yamaha Girls Dominate Podium at QLD MX Championship Opener

4 Apr 2010

Yamaha’s female racers hogged the entire podium at the Queensland Motocross Championship opener at Mareeba over the Easter weekend.  Queensland Yamaha Girl’s Team (QYGT) rookie Courtney Knight took out top honors with Kiera Smith (Burdekin Motorcycles) in second and Tamara Gray (QGYT) in third.

The Mareeba track in the tropical north was in perfect condition as the weekend started, but constant drizzle and a pounding from the 300 bikes entered made the track extremely rough and was a huge challenge for all competitors over the two day event.

16 year old Courtney Knight (Team Moto Moorooka) has been a revelation since joining the senior ranks and was unfazed by the conditions. Knight rode her Yamaha YZ250F to three hole shots and three flawless wins in the Senior Women’s Open Class in a superb display. The speedy Gold Coast girl even tried her hand in the male Pro Lite class and was able to qualify for the 40 rider final.

“I was nervous coming in to this weekend not knowing quite what to expect. I hadn’t raced all these girls before, or ridden the track but after a few laps in the first race I was able to relax and just ride my race. I am stoked to win today and now look forward to round two at Dysart which is also a new track for me,” Knight said.

Current Queensland number one, Kiera Smith raced well all weekend and her consistent 2-2-3 in the three points paying races locked down second overall for the round.

Tamara Gray (Bayside Yamaha) had mixed results, struggling with starts all weekend. He up and down weekend included 3-6-2 moto finishes, but was enough to earn her third overall for the round and still with plenty of points up her sleeve. The final moto saw Gray return to form and charge through the pack to second place logging some of her best lap times along the way.

“I have definitely had better starts to the championship, and worse starts too ”.  Gray laughed. “I was struggling with an injury from a practice crash last week but feel optimistic for the remaining two rounds.  I am going to be busy working on my starts this week and getting some further treatment for my knee which I know will be the key to get me through next weekend.”

Brooke Thiemann (Cabooluture Motorcycles) had a tough day at the office. Illness over the off season prevented her from riding or training in the lead up to the event and came in unprepared as a result.

Thiemann finished a commendable 12th overall.  One of the toughest competitors on track, Brooke picked herself up and dusted herself off and kept going despite going down hard in moto two and three.

“I was going well until mid way through the race, when my energy would just run out.  The bumps just seemed twice the size!”

“After the crash I had in the last moto, I need to get my injuries scene to and make a decision if I will be able to race at round two.  It will be a nervous next couple of days for me”.

The girls will continue their battle next weekend as the championship heads south to Dysart in Central Queensland for round two before winding up at Roma in a months’ time.
