Yamaha Junior Racing Takes Three SSMX Series Victories

11 Sep 2011

The Queensland Yamaha Junior Racing team finished off the 2011 Shell Advance Sunshine State Motocross Series winning two classes for the day and claiming three series wins.

The Kilcoy club hosted the eighth and final round of this years’ series on a cool, sunny day with near perfect track conditions. Joel Dinsdale had already wrapped up the 13 to 14 years 250 class at the previous round, while Wilson Todd did likewise in the 12 to 15 years 85cc division so the Kilcoy round was used as a final hit out for the riders in the lead up to the Australian Junior Motocross Championships at Murray Bridge in three weeks time.

Wilson Todd claimed the round win on his YZ85, posting 2-1-2 finishes in a very consistent day for the rising star. Despite a crash in race one, he still managed to claw his way back to second, took a wire to wire win in race two and rode a smart final race to take home the round win.

He also backed that up with a fifth place finish for the round in the 13 to 15 years 125cc class. But more impressively, Todd finished third overall for the series in a stunning debut year on the bigger capacity bike.

So, after eight rounds and 44 races across two bikes, Todd takes home the series win on his 85cc and third overall on his 125. Add that to his state championship victory on the 85 and fifth on his 125 earlier in the season and it all adds up to another impressive year for the 13 year old Atherton charger.

“We came down today because I wanted to finish up with a podium for the series on the 125 so it’s good to get that,” Todd said.

“It’s been a busy year for us travelling to all these events and I want to thank my Mum and Dad for the hours they put into my racing. I also want to thank Queensland Yamaha Junior Racing for their awesome support along with our team sponsors,” Todd ends.

Joel Dinsdale again contested the 13 to 14 years 250cc and the 13 to 15 years 125 class taking five race victories from the six races. He dominated the opening two legs of the 250cc class winning the races comfortably but crashed twice in the final moto which put a damper on his otherwise perfect day. 1-1-13 scores netted him third for the round and he won this class in the series by over 140 points.

There was no such blemish on his YZ125 taking three race wins from three starts to lock down the class win for the day and on top of that secure the series win also.

These results top an amazing year for Dinsdale, who has now won both Sunshine State Series, a Queensland championship on the 250 and a third on the 125.

“I’m a bit dirty on myself for the last 250 race. I must have had a brain explosion to crash twice like that,” he says with frustration.

“But I feel like I’m riding well and today I was on my race bikes for the nationals and they are awesome. Both are the best bikes I have had and I can’t wait to race them in Murray Bridge.”

The boys now look forward to the Junior Nationals in South Australia starting on October 1. The week-long event pits the nation’s best riders together to determine the age champions for 2011.
