The
Guide to Yamaha Model Designation Codes
The model names and code letters make it easy to select exactly the right outboard. As in the example shown below, the prefix letter indicates the basic engine type (2-stroke, 4-stroke, etc), the number gives a guide to the appx shaft horsepower, and the single letter immediately after the number shows the 'generation' of the model (ie: 'A' is the first generation of motors in that particular horsepower, 'B' is the second, and so on).
Any additional code letters identify the variant of the engine (ie: electric or manual start, steering method, type of tilt system, shaft length, etc).
If you are having trouble identifying the features in a model, remember that each character that makes up the model code is unique and only used once. If all else fails, simply select each letter from your model and match it to the corresponding feature listed in the tables below.
An
example of model coding could is F350AETOX.
This reads as follows: |
 |
|
 |
 |
| F |
Engine Type - in this particular example, 'F' indicates that it is a 4-stroke motor. 2-stroke motors do not have a letter prefix (ie: all standard 2-stroke models start with a number). |
| 350 |
Horsepower - this
is the prop shaft horsepower of the model (350 HP in this case). Every model features a number between 2 and 350 (no table below). |
| A |
Engine Generation - in this example, 'A'
is the first generation of motors in the 350 horsepower series, 'B' would be the second, etc. Every model has an engine generation code (no table below). |
| E |
Starting/Steering Method - 'E' for electric start. See the Starting/Steering Method table below for other possible codes |
| T |
Tilt System - 'T' signifies that this model has Power Trim & Tilt or Negative Power Trim & Tilt. See the Tilt System table below for other possible codes |
| O |
Lubrication System - 'O' means this model uses Precision Blend™ Oil Injection. If there is no code specified, the engine uses oil/fuel pre-mixing. These are the only 2 possibilities for this feature. |
| X |
Outboard Transom Height - 'X' indicates that this model has an ultra-long height. See the Outboard Transom Height table below for other possible codes. Every model features a transom height. |
