Beaton Holds Lead ProMX

Jed Beaton split the points with championship rival, Kyle Webster, to maintain a thirteen point lead in the MX1 championship at the halfway point of the ProMX Championship.
Beaton, who has carried the points leaders red plate since the opening round, continued his on-track feud with Webster and the pair shared the points, both finishing on 47 points for the day but Websters 2-1 results get the win due to the better finish in the final race over Beaton’s 1-2.

In what has become a common occurrence with these two combatants, over one hour of racing saw the duo separated by less the two seconds at the end and each race was a mirror image of the other.

In race one, Beaton got the jumped and but in some big laps to get the lead and good track position. Then as the race progressed, Webster put in a couple of big pushed and inched his way closer to the rear wheel of Beaton, only for the Yamaha rider to nail a hot lap a few laps from the finish and give himself the breathing room he needed to take the race win over Webster.

Race two and it was Webster who got the lead on the opening lap and Beaton doing the chasing. The Yamaha rider started to eat into the gap to Webster and has drawn within a second with a lap or two to go. It turned into another sprint to the finish with Webster holding sway and he went on to win with Beaton in his shadow.

To give some perspective to the speed these two are generating, in race two, the pair where over one minute ahead of the rider in third and had lapped up to seventh place in the MX1 field.

“Another weekend and another battle with Kyle,” Beaton begins. “While today wasn’t a round win, it was good to get a race win and also not leak any points in the championship.

“We both seemed to have some strong points on the track and the rider behind has the small advantage with the lappers and also being able to see what the rider in front is doing. But a solid weekend and we will keep working hard as the last four rounds will only see the intensity go up more,” Beaton offers.

It was a frustrating day for teammate Maximus Purvis. The talented New Zealander same into the weekend feeling better than previous rounds and was looking to regain the form he had that lead to winning the 2025 New Zealand Motocross Championships earlier in the year.

The day started well for Purvis who qualified in third and looked good on the bike. He was able to carry that confidence into race one and after running second on the opening lap, dropped back to third but then stayed strong for the remainder of the moto to cross the line in third and match his best moto result for the season so far.

Unfortunately, things went pare-shaped in race two. After another good start and with him inside the top five, he made mistake coming off the top of the hill and lost control of his YZ450F. He was thrown from his bike and into the side of the bank that lined the track.

The impact rattled him, and he took some time to regather himself. He slowly remounted and then rode back to the CDR Yamaha pits to assess the damage.

He will need to undergo further scans and tests before making a decision on when he can ride again.

“I’m pretty sore now,” he explained. "I got sideways as I came off drop away and then I landed in some soft stuff that just sent me sideways. I hit pretty hard and bent the bike up so I will get checked out during the week and see how what comes back and how I feel.”

Round five of the ProMX Championship moves to Warwick in Queensland on June 22.
