Comparo Ride | Yamaha MT-07LA and YZF-R7LA
Sheena and Natasha Discover The Best LAMS bike for them
Yamaha’s MT-07 and YZF-R7 share common roots, both are based on Yamaha’s hugely successful twin-cylinder CP-2 platform, and both are available in a learner-legal LAMS as well as a high-output model for riders with an unrestricted licence. However, each motorcycle tells a very different story.
Riding buddies, Sheena and Natasha recently embarked on a weekend ride along the scenic coast roads south of Sydney, each aboard their chosen model from Yamaha’s LAMS range. The rider was an opportunity for each to discover more about their chosen machines but also discover what the other’s choice in ride had to offer. As the ride unfolded, each discovered the character of both models.
.
Sheena chose the Icon Blue MT-07 due to its inviting, upright stance. She describes the sensation as comfortably relaxed yet poised: "It's so relaxed, you can sit up and take in your surroundings, but if you want to push it, you can easily slide back and tuck in." The wide handlebars offer excellent leverage and comfort.
In contrast, Natasha, arrived at the meeting point riding a YZF-R7 Matt Black, captivated by its sporty intent, something she loved about here first motorcycle, a YZF-R3. "You’re so tucked in on the R7; it’s a much racier seating position," she explains. “The footpegs and seat are higher than the MT-07 providing a sporty forward-leaning stance to emphasise its racing heritage,” she adds, "It’s not uncomfortable, but you’re certainly slanted forward, and the fairing slices cleanly through the wind."
Both motorcycles utilise Yamaha’s celebrated CP2 twin-cylinder engine, yet each bike offers a distinctly unique ride. Natasha enthusiastically describes her YZF-R7 as "feeling like a little rocket ship," a sensation amplified by the bike's taller gearing and aerodynamic fairing. Sheena, meanwhile, finds her MT-07 lively but approachable, noting the sound from nature Yamaha’s acoustic amplifying system. She affectionately labels the bike "attitude without intimidation."
.
As the two riders swap between the two bikes throughout the day, differences between the two models continue to reveal themselves. The YZF-R7’s firmer, adjustable suspension, steeper head angle, and shorter wheelbase are evident to both riders, providing razor-sharp cornering agility. In contrast, the MT-07’s more compliant suspension offers comfort and confidence, particularly suited for daily commutes and leisurely tours through varying road conditions, “But the MT-07 can also get sporty anytime you want it to,” notes Sheena.
Technologically, the two motorcycles showcase different generations of Yamaha electronics suits. Sheena loves the MT-07’s vibrant dashboard, complete with adjustable riding models and smartphone connectivity, making it practical for daily usability. Natasha, however, appreciates the R7’s more race-focused cockpit and performance-enhancing Brembo radial master brake cylinder. To her, the YZF-R7 has been clearly designed with beginner track enthusiasts in mind.
.
Ultimately, both the MT-07 and YZF-R7 have been to take riders on journeys that are tailored to their preferences. Natasha describes the YZF-R7 as "a sportsbike patiently awaiting its first or next track day—eager to grow alongside its rider." Sheena praises her MT-07 as "a friendly hooligan," emphasising its versatility, practicality, and approachable fun.
Choosing between these two motorcycles is a delightful dilemma for the pair. The MT-07 caters perfectly to those seeking versatility, comfort, and excitement across diverse riding conditions. The YZF-R7, meanwhile, appeals to riders desiring a bike that can take them a little beyond commuting, something that rewards growth and skill improvement without overwhelming the rider.
At the end of the day, Sheen and Natasha stuck with the bike they arrives on, which was no suprise to either of them. However, the day did provide a glimpse of what the other looks for in a motorcycle.
