Ryder Kingsford’s round podium streak has come to an end after he finished fourth in the MX2 class at round five of the ProMX championship at Warwick, over the weekend.
Kingsford has been a model of consistency in 2025 and despite missing the podium at round five, he still proved that even on his off days, he is right at the pointy end and continued to accumulate points towards the championship. The 20-year-old Monster Energy Yamalube Yamaha rider finished the day with 5-3 results to claim fourth for the round and consolidate second place in the MX2 championship. Despite it being a challenging day, he is still only seventeen points from the championship lead and with three rounds to go, well and truly in the title fight.
The opening race saw Kingsford move forward in the early stages, but just as moved into third and began to focus on the top two, he fell from his bike in a tight left hand turn and dropped several positions as he regathered himself. He rejoined the race in around eighth place and while he was able to make some passes, the best he could manage was fifth and he was clearly disappointed with his performance.
Determined to redeem himself in moto two, Kingsford rocketed from the gate and took the race lead. He then took the wrong line in a rutted turn and lost the lead. He maintained third until half race distance when Alex Larwood was able to sneak by and then for the remainder of the race the top three riders were never further apart then a couple of seconds.
Kingsford wasn’t able to fight his way back to the front and had to settle for third.
“It wasn’t the day I was hoping for, and I just felt a bit off all day,” he recalls. “I wasn’t cornering the way I wanted to, and I just didn’t have any flow in my riding. It was more of a fight today.
“I was better in race two, but If I’m being honest, I should have won that race. I was right there but I didn’t have it in my today, but it only motivates me more and I will rebound at Canberra.
“Brodie didn’t have the perfect day either, so I didn’t lose that many points in the championship, so that is a positive to take away. I know I’m better that how I raced today, and I will fix that when we get to the next round,” he ends.
It was a consistent day for teammate Jayce Cosford who finished the day in sixth place with 6-6 results. Cosford started the day well, qualifying in third place, but an average start in race one left him with plenty of work to do to improve his position. He was able to move forward but wasn’t within reach of the top five at race end.
The start in race two was much better and he trailed Kingsford through the first turn inside the top three. He battled bravely the whole race but just didn’t have the speed to match it with the fastest riders this weekend.
“I felt like in each race I just had some lazy laps at times, and I just lost the tow of the lead group because of it,” Cosford stated. “I was able to pick it back up during the race and run a similar pace, but with the top five riding at such a good pace, any time you lose focus, the gap gets away from you pretty quickly.
“It gives me something to work on over the next couple of weeks and my goal at Canberra to maintain the intensity for the full 30 minutes.”
With Canberra just two weeks away, it is a quick turnaround for the Brisbane based team.
