Yamaha Racing Team’s Mike Jones returned to the podium at round four of the Australian Superbike Championship finishing the day in second place.
The 2026 season hasn’t gone the way Jones had hoped for, but he finally found some joy in a confidence boosting day at Morgan Park with two impressive rides and a result he and his team can be content with. The wet weather in the area on Friday saw the Superbike riders with limited track time as showers and drizzle feel over the circuit all day, but thankfully Saturday dawned much clearer and it was back to business as usual for the remainder of the weekend.
Jones was able to place himself on the front row of the grid with P3 in qualifying and with plenty of friends and fans in attendance, the Queenslander was hopeful of a good result.
He turned in a 3-2 day to finish behind Harrison Voight for the round and land in second place. With Voight in the lead, Jones spent most of his time engaged with Josh Waters as the pair went toe to toe for the majority of each race.
Waters was able to break clear of Jones in race one, but Jones turned the tables in race two and after fighting his way past Waters early in the race, he was able to finish hold his position and improve his race one result and park his R1M in P2.
The good points haul on the weekend as seen Jones jump to sixth in the championship and withing striking distance of a championship podium.
“A much better weekend for the team and I and just happy to be back on the podium again,” Jones offers. “The opening few rounds haven’t gone well so I really needed to bounce back strongly this weekend and ensure I finish the championship strongly.
“I didn’t have the pace to match Harrison this weekend and he was riding exceptionally well, but it’s nice to be back in the battle and somewhere near the front again.
“The team put in a big effort and its good to finally reward them with a decent result,” Jones ends.
The weekend was a tougher one for team mate, JJ Nahlous who couldn’t matched his speed and results from previous rounds. Nahlous has been a busy man of late, contesting events in Europe in between his ASBK schedule and flew directing back in Australia for the ASBK round at Morgan Park.
He finished the day with 9-7 scores and disappointed that he wasn’t closer to the front.
“The wet weather on Friday made things difficult for us and ended up having to put so many changes through the bike on Saturday and get dialled on. That extra few sessions would have been handy just to get me comfortable early and able to focus on putting fast, consistent laps together.
“But the team were great and worked hard all weekend trying to find something. It wasn’t our weekend, but I’m confident we will be back on track at the next round at Queensland Raceway.”
The fifth and final round of the shortened 2026 ASBK season is on June 26-28 at Queensland Raceway.
