QLD YJR Off to Flying Start in 2015

The Queensland Yamaha Junior Racing duo of Hunter Lawrence and Levi Rogers kicked off their 2015 season in fine style at the opening round of the Shell Advance Sunshine State Motocross Series held at Roma over the weekend.

Under clear blue skies and on a well prepared track, Lawrence took two class wins and Rogers claimed third in their respective classes.

Roma was the first motocross outing for Lawrence on a Yamaha and also his first race since recovering from a broken collar bone just six weeks ago. Lawrence instantly clicked into gear and dominated proceedings to take the prefect three from three race wins in the 15 years 250cc and the same result in the 13-15 years 125.

“I have been back on the bike for just over a week since breaking my collarbone but the injury wasn’t an issue all day and things went pretty smoothly. I have really enjoyed the change to Yamaha and the team has been great in getting the bike set up for me and helping me with my racing,” Lawrence explains.

“The track was challenging to ride as there were some deep ruts out there and then as it dried out become hard pack and a little slippery so it was important to ride with some flow and use plenty of throttle control.

“It was a good start to the series and I can’t wait for the next round,” he said.

Levi Rogers showed he had done plenty of work during the off season and wanted to get the series started on a strong note. Rogers claimed 2-2-6 results in the three motos to finish third in the 9-11 years 85cc class but showed he has improved his speed significantly.

Rogers went bar to bar with Jett Lawrence for the entire moto in race two only to fall .8 of second short of a win at the finish line. It was easily the race of the day and a great confidence booster for the boy from Blackwater in Central Queensland.

His sixth in the final moto came after three crashes but although disappointed with his final result, he will bounce back in the coming rounds.

“I really wanted to beat Jett in that second race but I made a mistake on the second last corner and he was able to get passed me. It was awesome racing him and I know he is faster than me but if I can keep trying to race with him and get closer, I know I will get faster,” Rogers said.

The next event for the Queensland Yamaha Junior Racing team is the opening round of the QLD Motocross Championships at Rockhampton on April 4/5. Hunter Lawrence will compete at the opening round of the MX Nationals in Horsham on March 29 as he takes on the Rookie Cup.
