How To | Yamaha WR Power Tuner App

Perfect Map Building is Easier Than You Think

Modern enduro bikes are incredibly capable machines straight out of the crate, but one of the biggest advantages of the latest generation Yamaha WR models is how easily you can tailor them to suit the rider. The 2026 Yamaha WR250F and WR450F both come equipped with Yamaha’s Power Tuner app, allowing riders to adjust fuel delivery, ignition timing and traction control straight from their phone.

For many riders though, that level of adjustability can be a little intimidating. There are countless combinations of settings and unless you understand what ignition timing and fuel tables are doing at different throttle positions and RPM ranges, it’s easy to get lost.

Now, while Yamaha has updated the app to be much more user-friendly thanks to a simple slide mechanism in the app that lets you adjust throttle response, power, engine braking and traction control, some people still want more detail. So the Yamaha Power Tuner app still comes with the old settings too for greater adjustability.  So for those of you wanting a very specific map for your WR250F or WR450F, Yamaha Australia had an idea.

Instead of expecting every rider to become a mapping expert, Yamaha Australia asked ADB magazine to work with them to develop three simple, real-world engine maps that WR owners could load directly into their bikes depending on the terrain and their skill level. The brief was straightforward: build a Soft map, a Medium map and an Aggressive map that transform the personality of the bike.

The goal was to give riders three distinct setups, something forgiving for slippery single track, something balanced for general trail riding and something hard-hitting for riders who want maximum performance.

Using the updated Power Tuner interface, we worked through ignition timing, fuel delivery and traction control settings to create maps that are easy to load and even easier to ride with

The result is three maps for the WR250F and three for the WR450F, each designed to suit a different rider and different terrain.

WR250F MAPS

.

Soft Map
The soft map for the WR250F was designed specifically for beginner riders and difficult terrain like slippery single track, wet conditions and technical trails where traction matters more than outright power.

To achieve this, we added additional fuel in the lower RPM range and retarded the ignition timing. This softens the initial hit of the engine and slows the rate at which the revs climb. Instead of snapping off the bottom like a race bike, the engine delivers power in a smooth, controllable way.

Down low, the bike becomes far less aggressive and easier to manage on tight trails. The engine still carries good mid-range and top-end performance, but the harsh punch that WR engines can sometimes deliver right off idle is noticeably reduced.

Traction control is also set higher in this map, which helps the rear tyre hook up rather than spin. The result is a very predictable engine character that tractors through tricky terrain without lighting up the rear tyre.

For riders who are newer to the WR platform, or tackling slippery bush riding, this map transforms the bike into something far more forgiving.

Medium Map
The medium map is designed to be the default trail riding setup. It keeps the smooth throttle response of the soft map but restores some of the aggression and drive through the middle of the rev range.

Here we focused on fuelling changes through the midrange to give the bike stronger drive when rolling on the throttle. Ignition timing is still adjusted to keep the power delivery manageable, but the engine feels noticeably more lively.

The result is a very linear power delivery that builds smoothly as the revs climb. There’s enough punch to accelerate hard out of corners or climb hills, but the power remains predictable and easy to control.

This map works well for the majority of trail riders. It gives the WR250F plenty of performance without making the bike overly aggressive, and it maintains strong traction when exiting corners.

If you ride a mix of terrain, from tighter bush trails to faster flowing fire roads, this is likely the map you’ll use the most.

Aggressive Map
The aggressive map is where the WR250F really comes alive.

In this setup we advanced the ignition timing and leaned the fuelling slightly, allowing the engine to rev more quickly and hit harder through the midrange and top end.

Traction control is switched off in this map, meaning the rider has full control over how much power reaches the ground. Without electronic intervention, the bike feels sharper and far more responsive.

The difference is immediately noticeable. The engine spins up faster, pulls harder through the middle of the rev range and carries strong power right through to the limiter.

On open trails or faster terrain, the WR250F suddenly feels like a race bike again. Third gear pulls aggressively and the engine delivers the kind of punch experienced riders expect from a performance enduro machine.

It’s not the ideal map for slippery conditions, the extra hit can generate wheelspin, but in the right terrain it completely transforms the character of the bike.

WR450F MAPS

.

.

If the WR250F is lively, the WR450F is an entirely different animal. The 450 already has massive torque and power on tap, so the goal with these maps was slightly different: make the big bike more manageable in the bush while still unlocking its performance when riders want it.

Soft Map
For many riders, a 450 can feel like too much bike in tight terrain. The soft map was designed to calm the WR450F down and make it easier to ride through technical trails.

We increased fuelling at lower RPM and retarded ignition timing to dull the aggressive hit that big four-strokes often have right off the bottom.

The result is a noticeably gentler power delivery. The engine still has huge torque, it’s a 450 after all, but the throttle response becomes smoother and more manageable.

Instead of lunging forward with every throttle input, the bike builds speed more progressively. That makes it easier to maintain traction and control when riding through rocky trails or slippery sections.

For riders who find a 450 intimidating in the bush, this map makes the bike far more approachable.

Medium Map
Interestingly, during testing the medium map quickly became the favourite setup for the WR450F.

This map focuses on making the engine extremely linear. By adjusting fuelling through the middle of the rev range and softening ignition timing in key areas, the power delivery becomes incredibly smooth and predictable.

Instead of the sudden bursts of torque that 450 engines are known for, the bike pulls cleanly and consistently through the entire rev range.

The result is a bike that feels powerful but easy to control. Riders can roll the throttle on confidently without worrying about the engine ripping their arms off.

For general trail riding, this map strikes a perfect balance. It keeps the WR450F’s impressive performance while making it easier to manage in tight terrain.

During testing, it was arguably the most enjoyable map on the 450.

Aggressive Map

Finally, the aggressive map unleashes everything the WR450F has to offer.

Ignition timing is advanced and fuelling is leaned slightly, allowing the engine to respond instantly and rev quickly. Traction control is switched off completely, meaning the rider is fully responsible for controlling the power.

The result is exactly what you’d expect, explosive acceleration and massive drive through the rev range.

Hit the throttle and the bike responds instantly. The rear tyre lights up easily and the engine pulls incredibly hard, especially once you reach the midrange.

In open terrain this map is exhilarating. The WR450F becomes brutally fast, capable of pulling hard through gears and covering ground incredibly quickly.

It’s not a beginner setup by any means, but for experienced riders who want maximum performance, this map delivers exactly that.

Three personalities, one bike
The beauty of these maps is how dramatically they change the character of the WR platform. With a few taps on the Yamaha Power Tuner app, riders can transform their bike from a soft, traction-focused trail machine to a hard-hitting race weapon.

Whether you’re tackling slippery single track, flowing trail loops or wide-open terrain, there’s now a map that lets your WR250F or WR450F perform exactly how you want it to.

And the best part? You don’t need a degree in engine tuning to use it. Just load the maps we have produced here, ride the bike, and let the trails decide which one suits you best.
