Hunter Lawrence in good form after winning round two of the SSMX series at Leyburn
Levi Rogers continues to impress with second place in the 9-11 years 85cc

The Queensland Yamaha Junior Racing Team of Hunter Lawrence and Levi Rogers again enjoyed another prosperous weekend as they competed in round two of the 2015 Shell Advance Sunshine State Motocross Series at Haworth Park, Leyburn.

The sandy track made it challenge for the smaller wheeled bikes and the event was cut back to two rounds as a serious injury to one of the riders required urgent medical attention but YJR powered through relatively unscathed.

Hunter Lawrence continued his fine form with another dominant display at Leyburn. Competing in the 15 years 250cc and the 13-15 years 125cc divisions, Lawrence was the man to beat and went on to make it four wins from four starts across the day.

Despite not feeling the best and riding with a stomach complaint, Lawrence showed he was just as capable winning races with the holeshot or running down the field after not getting a great jump.

Lawrence holds the lead in the series after the first two rounds on both bikes and now looks forward to round three at his home track of Coolum in two weeks’ time.

“The races went pretty well, although the track wasn’t as deep or as sandy as it has been in the past. It’s always fun to ride here and the long lap of over two minutes means you have to stay focused otherwise it’s easy to make a mistake and fall.

“I hope Tristan is ok after his fall and makes a full recovery,” Lawrence said.

Levi Rogers was able to minimize his mistakes this weekend and take two second place finishes in the 9-11 years 85cc class. Rogers powered his YZ85cc into second place in the opening heat before a small tip over in the sand, yet he was able to regain his composure and charge back into second place.

Moto two was a little less eventful with Rogers locking down second place early in the race and held it to the finish. After the opening two rounds, Rogers holds down second place in the championship behind Jett Lawrence and continues to improve with every outing.

“I fell off three times in practice and I wasn’t happy about that,” Rogers stated. “But in the races, I was able to get some better lines and not rush my turns and, apart from a small crash in race one, it was a good day.

“I’m racing every weekend at the moment and trying to get faster, so thank you to my Mum and Dad for taking me everywhere and helping me out.”

The Shell Advance Sunshine State Motocross Series is ran over six rounds with Coolum, Kilcoy, Hervey Bay and Tivoli still to be run to determine the series winners. It has been a mainstay of the Queensland motocross calendar for over 20 years now boasting up to 500 riders at each round.
